Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay coming to Regina February 4, 2012
Sometimes, one person is all it takes to inspire many. Twenty-five years ago, that person was Rick Hansen and his Man In Motion World Tour.
“Twenty-five or more years ago, people in wheelchairs were often told the word can’t or impossible,” said Mayor Pat Fiacco. “Rick Hansen helped change that narrow, archaic thinking.”
The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay retraces the Canadian segment of the original Man In Motion World Tour, traveling 12,000 kilometres, through 600 communities and concluding in Vancouver, British Columbia on May 22, 2012. This time, one will inspire many in motion; engaging 7,000 participants from across Canada who have made their own difference in the lives of others.
On February 4th, everyone is invited to cheer on the Rick Hansen Medal-bearers, as the relay makes its way to Regina. Celebrations will start at 3 p.m. at City Square plaza on Scarth Street, and will include live entertainment and recognition of the Rick Hansen team.
“I am extremely honoured to have the relay come through Regina and our committee is working very hard to provide a warm welcome and host the celebrations they deserve” said Jennifer Gabrysh, Chair of the Regina Host Committee.
The celebrations will continue into the evening, thanks to a partnership with the Regina Pats. The Regina Pats have provided support by dedicating their game that evening, versus the Lethbridge Hurricanes, to the Rick Hansen Foundation.
The game events will include a tribute to the Rick Hansen Foundation, a ceremonial puck drop, a sledge hockey demo from Team Canada developmental players, a silent auction for three jerseys autographed by Rick Hansen, with proceeds going towards the foundation, and recognition of Regina’s medal bearers.
