Winnipeg, MB – The Regina Pats (1-0-1) fell 6-5 in a shootout to the Winnipeg ICE (1-1-0) on Saturday night at the Rink Training Centre in Winnipeg, MB.
Conor Geekie had himself a night for the ICE, scoring two goals and an assist as well as scoring the shootout winner, beating Spencer Welke blocker side.
Saturday’s contest had the same type of feel, pace and action as Friday night’s 5-4 win, as there was four different lead changes in the loss. The Pats took a 5-4 lead at 13:35 of the third period, with Zack Stringer crashing the net and potting home the go-ahead goal. Just over two minutes later, Skyler Bruce broke in on a breakaway and tied it for the ICE, forcing overtime.
ICE goaltender Daniel Hauser got the win, allowing five goals on 31 shots. For the Pats, Welke got the loss, giving up just two goals on 24 shots. Matthew Kieper started the game for Regina and stopped 20 of 23 before switching with Welke midway through the second frame.
Cole Dubinsky led the way for the Pats offensively with a short-handed goal and three helpers, giving him six points (2G-4A) through two games this pre-season. Connor Bedard and Stringer also tallied two goals and one assist in the loss.
This wraps up a home-and-home with the ICE. Regina will play Winnipeg seven times in the regular season, with the next meeting scheduled for October 6th at the Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg, MB.
The Pats have four more pre-season contests, including a home-and-home against the Prince Albert Raiders next week.
