PREVIEW: Pats in search for fourth straight win Friday


The Regina Pats (28-22-5-0) return home Friday night to take on the Kootenay ICE (23-28-3-0). Puck drop is at 7 p.m. at the Brandt Centre. The Pats were last in action on Tuesday, winning a third straight game, 5-2 in Brandon over the Wheat Kings. The ICE were in Prince Albert on Wednesday, dropping a 4-3 contest. Tonight is the third of four meetings on the season between the Pats and ICE, Regina holds a 2-0-0-0 record in the season series. The Lead Up: Pats win third straight game Tuesday in Brandon
The Regina Pats won a third consecutive game, 5-2 in Brandon over the Wheat Kings on Tuesday night. The Wheat Kings opened the scoring 2:52 into the first, but Jesse Gabrielle replied with a powerplay goal for his 8th and it was 1-1 after 1. In the second, Gabrielle would pot his second of the game, ninth of the season and Regina took their first lead. The Pats got it to 3-1 when Jared Legien scored on a partial breakaway for his 19th and that was the score heading to the third. In the final frame, Luka Burzan scored on a Brandon powerplay to cut the Pats lead to 3-2. However, Regina responded with a powerplay goal of their own from Cameron Hebig, his 37th and the two goal lead was restored. Hebig added an empty netter late for his 38th and the Pats took the two points in a 5-2 final. Sam Steel led the offence with a three point night.

Head to Head
Tonight is the third of four meetings between the Pats and ICE, Regina has won the first two meetings of the year, once on home ice and once on the road. Robbie Holmes leads the Pats against Kootenay with three goals and an assist. Jake Leschyshyn is next with three points while five others have two points. The ICE are led by Brett Davis and Colton Kroeker who each have two points against Regina, four others have one point. Regina currently sits in the first wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference while the ICE are third in the Central Division.

200 Career Assists
Pats captain Sam Steel became just the ninth player in franchise history to hit 200 assists for his WHL career on Tuesday night. The 19-year-old put up three helpers to reach 202 assists which is good for eighth in franchise history. He sits seven assists back of Jock Callander (210) and 14 behind Adam Brooks (216). With his three point night Tuesday, Steel jumped past both Jordan Eberle and Frank Kovacs into 13th in overall scoring in franchise history with 312 points. Brian Varga is 12th on the list with 329 points, Brett Lysak 11th with 334 and Adam Brooks 10th with 335 points.

Hebig Rolling
Edmonton Oilers prospect Cameron Hebig is on quite a tear through the first 11 games of his Pats career, scoring eight goals and adding 7 assists for 15 points. The 20-year-old has scored four goals and has an assist in his last three games to reach 73 points for the season, which is tied for 10th in league scoring. His 38 goals are seventh best in the WHL.
